Racing pistons are often subjected to a variety of special (and expensive) machine work, including dome contouring, special ring grooves, deeper valve reliefs, and lightening. However, most street and high-performance pistons require no additional machine work. The Speed Pro Hypereutectic pistons used in our engine buildup were installed virtually âright out of the box.â The piston weights were so close that we even received a discounted price for the balancing.
If you purchased factory-gapped rings, they should require no additional work by your machine shop (other than making sure that the end gap is correct; see Chapter 7). If you opted for ungapped rings, you must either gap the rings yourself, or have your machine shop do it for you. If you have never gapped rings, we strongly urge that you have your machine shop do it. Hereâs why. Many shops own a precision tool such as the ABS gapper (see Sidebar âSetting Ring End Gapâ on page 108), which quickly cuts a precision gap. Using this tool, a machine shop can do an extremely accurate job and charge a reasonable fee. If you use a file or hand-operated cutter, it can take hours to do the same job, and the result almost certainly wonât be as accurate. Plus, you just may wind up buying an extra ring or two to replace the ones youâve cut too wide.
